Route surveying and layout

Surveying and setting out routes for roads, pipelines and cables, from first alignment to marking on site.

Pipelines, roads, power lines and cables all follow a route, and the route decides much of a project's cost, risk and approvals. Geomarins surveys and sets out routes from the first desk study to the pegs on the ground, on land, across swamps and rivers, and along the coast.

Stages of a route survey

  • Desk study: maps, imagery and existing records to identify route options and constraints
  • Reconnaissance: a field visit to check the options and see the ground
  • Corridor survey: a topographic survey of a strip along the chosen route
  • Alignment: fixing the centreline, bends and crossings to suit the design
  • Setting out: marking the centreline, right of way and key points on site
  • As-built survey: recording the final position of what was built

Crossings and constraints

Routes cross roads, rivers, creeks, railways, existing pipelines and settlements. Each crossing needs detail: levels, widths, banks and existing services. In the Niger Delta and coastal areas, routes may cross swamp, mangrove and tidal water, where survey methods and access must be planned with care. Where a route reaches the sea, our metocean services can measure the waves and currents that affect the landfall and nearshore section.

Right of way and land

A route passes through land with many owners and users. Our surveys record the right of way, the land parcels it crosses and the features within it, giving the information needed for land acquisition and compensation.

Accurate, consistent data

All survey work is tied to national control using GNSS, with total stations and levelling for detail. Data is delivered in formats your designers can use directly, such as drawings, coordinates and digital models of the ground.

  • Corridor topographic survey
  • Alignment and crossing surveys
  • Setting out of centreline and right of way
  • Right of way and land parcel records

Frequently asked questions

Can you survey routes through swamp and mangrove areas?

Yes. We plan access and methods for swamp, mangrove and tidal areas, which are common on routes in the Niger Delta and coastal Nigeria.

What do we receive at the end?

Drawings, coordinates and ground models of the route, with alignment, crossing details and right of way records, in formats your designers can use.
